Why Does the US Still Use Fahrenheit and Imperial Units?
It is not that the US never tried to switch. It tried once, made it voluntary, and the momentum ran out.
Fahrenheit feels, to most of the rest of the world, like the outlier — a scale nobody chose, holding on for no clear reason. The actual history is more specific than that, and slightly different from the usual explanation. The US did not skip a global switch to metric out of stubbornness alone; it passed a law encouraging the switch, made it voluntary, and watched the effort stall within about a decade.
Fahrenheit and Celsius are both older than the metric system
Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit proposed his temperature scale in 1724, anchoring it to a brine solution's freezing point at 0° and, later, a value near human body temperature at the top end. Anders Celsius proposed his scale in 1742 — originally inverted, with 0° at boiling and 100° at freezing, flipped to the familiar orientation after his death. Both predate the metric system itself, which originated in France in the 1790s during the French Revolution as a deliberate break from the patchwork of regional units then in use across Europe. Fahrenheit was not competing against a metric alternative when it was adopted across Britain and its colonies; it simply came first.
The US did pass a metrication law — it just made it optional
The common assumption is that the US never seriously tried to go metric. It did: the Metric Conversion Act of 1975 declared metric the "preferred system" for US trade and commerce and established a US Metric Board to coordinate a national transition. What it did not do is make the switch mandatory, unlike the approach most other English-speaking countries took around the same period — the UK, Australia, and Canada all ran government-led, deadline-driven metrication programs starting in the 1960s and 70s that required schools, road signage, and industry to convert on a schedule.
Without a mandate or a deadline, the US effort depended on voluntary adoption by an enormous, already-standardized domestic market. Retooling manufacturing lines, replacing road signage nationwide, and reprinting decades of technical documentation all had a real, immediate cost with no forcing function requiring anyone to pay it. Public resistance to the idea did not help, but it was the absence of a deadline — not public opinion alone — that let the effort lose momentum. The US Metric Board was defunded and dissolved by 1982.
The US is more metric than it looks
The everyday framing — "the US uses imperial, everyone else uses metric" — undersells how much of the US already runs on metric units, quietly, in places most people don't think to check:
- Science and medicine. US laboratories, hospitals, and pharmaceutical dosing are metric almost without exception — medication is measured in milligrams and milliliters, not grains or fluid ounces, and body temperature in a US hospital chart is routinely recorded in Celsius alongside Fahrenheit.
- Bottled beverages. The 2-liter soda bottle is metric by federal standard, dating to a voluntary industry shift in the late 1970s that stuck even as broader metrication stalled.
- The military. US armed forces use metric units for range, distance, and munitions in coordination with NATO allies, most of whom are fully metric.
- Manufacturing and auto parts. Cars sold in the US, including US-brand vehicles, are largely built to metric fastener and engine specifications, because global parts supply chains are metric — a US-market vehicle's bolts are far more likely to be measured in millimeters than inches.
- Some sports. Track and field events (100m, marathon distances) and Olympic sports run on metric measurements even at the US high school and college level.
What survived almost entirely untouched is the layer of daily, non-technical life: weather reports, road distances and speed limits, body weight, cooking measurements, and construction (a US house is framed and sold in feet and square feet, not meters). That is precisely the layer with the least market pressure to change — no international supply chain forces a US recipe or a US speed limit sign into metric the way global manufacturing forces metric bolts into a US-assembled car.
Is the US really one of only three countries?
You'll frequently see the claim that the US, Liberia, and Myanmar are the only countries that haven't officially adopted the metric system. It's a real and commonly cited fact, but it overstates how clean the picture is elsewhere: the United Kingdom officially adopted metric decades ago and still measures road distances in miles, body weight in stone and pounds, and beer in pints — official adoption and daily habit are two different things almost everywhere imperial-derived units have ever been used, not just in the US.
The practical takeaway
None of this history changes the day-to-day reality: if you're reading an international recipe, following a forecast from a non-US source, buying a car with metric-spec parts, or working in a field (science, medicine, engineering, international trade) that defaults to metric, you'll be converting between the two systems regularly, and doing it in your head reliably is genuinely hard past a handful of common reference points.
